Covers are ***JUNK***May 22, 2008 Why I bought this bed:
I am super picky about dog beds. I want something that is going to provide my two large dogs (85 and 100 lbs) with a comfortable sleep. They are aging, so pampering them with a superior, comfortable dog bed is top priority for me. Also, the ideal dog bed should have strong, durable covers that keep water/slobber/stink/etc out of the bedding. I look for dog beds that are functional, easy to keep clean, and look nice in your home.
I looked and looked for the perfect bed. I was very hopeful when I finally decided on these beds (I ordered 2). However, I received them today and can say there is definitely room for improvement- primarily in the cover.
First, let me preface this review by pointing out that this bed used to be marketed by Simmons (the human mattress maker), but the product was spun off to a company called Pet Goods Manufacturing & Imports not long ago. Perhaps the bed was manufactured to higher standards under the Simmons name??? Maybe that is why so many people have given it such *glowing* reviews in the past??
Let's start with the construction of the bed itself. It was a little misleading. Since it was made by Simmons and marketed as a coil spring mattress, I thought it was going to be like a human bed. However, I could not find any detailed information on the construction, so I thought I would order them and give them a try. They are not like human mattresses. Basically it is a 1" foam sheet with strips of 5" thick foam set around the edges, which forms a foam box structure. Inside that box are the coil springs and who knows what else (the company doesn't provide this info anywhere). On top of this is a 1.75" foam sheet. All of these pieces are glued together to form a foam rectangle mattress. This foam block is placed into a nylon cover (zippered), and then into the outer cover (zippered).
Here is my opinion:
1) Mattress- The foam mattress does seem to be very sturdy. The coil structure gives it much more support than a regular slab of foam. Overall, I would give the foam mattress 4.0 - 4.5 stars. (Keep in mind I just got it out of the box. We will see how it wears over time.)
2) Waterproof cover- Not bad, but not spectacular. Just a thin, plain, black nylon cover with a zipper. The zipper seams are not serged, so it is only a matter of time before they fray or tear. I immediately took this into my sewing room and reinforced this seam.
3) Outer cover- ***JUNK! ABSOLUTE JUNK!*** There are so many flaws. I sew professionally, so I can easily recognize poor quality. Here are the problems:
a) The bottom of the cover is tissue-thin nylon. I mean really, really thin. Super thin. This material is not acceptable for ANY dog bed, let alone one that costs $150-$200. When I took it out of the box and examined it, I noticed there are already a few places where the material has started to rip at the seams. Won't last more than a few days. Once these covers rip (and they will...soon), you are just left with a plain hunk of foam.
b) Color- Whoever decided to make this cover in off-white has obviously never had a dog. Off-white stains and shows dog hair. Horrible choice.
c) Poorly made- Lots of loose threads, loose seams, cord accent was already fraying.
d) Appearance- Looks like a bare mattress. Who wants a bare mattress lying around their house?
THE BOTTOM LINE:
The mattress is decent. Probably a good buy. However, the covers are junk. I plan to sew new ones tomorrow. If I couldn't make covers for myself, I would have returned these beds. If you buy this bed, I suggest you find someone to make new, durable covers (just Google "custom dog bed covers"). Otherwise, just go buy a high quality crib mattress for your pooch.
Message to the Manufacturer:
Improve the covers! People who are willing to pay $200 for a premium dog bed are willing to pay an extra $20 for a good cover. It bothers me that I paid $400 for these beds and still have to spend my time and money making decent covers.
(It is an interesting side note that the mattress is made in America, but the covers are made in China. And they are poor quality, even by Chinese standards. The difference in quality between the items is vast.)

Great pet bedMar 10, 2008 This is a wonderful and sturdy bed. I got two for my two labs. They love laying on them. Highly recommend the fitted sheets. Even my cat likes to lay on them! Vey good quality.

Worth every pennyMar 04, 2008 I have a 95lb American Bulldog with hip dysplasia. Before buying this bed he would limp around a 1-2 times a week. He loves this bed and sleeps on it every night and hasn't limped since. He is tall enough to rest his head on my dining room table and this bed is big enough for him to sprawl out. I'm very pleased with this purchase and wouldn't even consider another dog bed after having this one. I even caught my 7yr napping on it once.

Great for large, heavy dogsFeb 05, 2008 This is the only bed our Great Dane doesn't smash down flat after a few weeks. Zipper on cover doesn't last as long as bed does though.

Paws down, the best dog bed available for large and/or arthritic dogsNov 01, 2007 Over the years, I bought a succession of foam dog beds for my 100-lb dog, Zeus. As he got older, the beds got more expensive, as I was buying specialty orthopedic foam beds to help combat his arthritis and age. When Zeus turned 12, and his current foam bed flattened, I finally decided to buy the Pet Goods 157 PetCare SSS OrthoCare 35-by-45-by-8-Inch Coil Spring Bed. After paying about 50-60 dollars apiece for his foam beds, the PetCare bed was more expensive than his other beds, and I had avoided buying it for that reason.
I'm an idiot.
The PetCare bed is, hands and paws down, the best dog bed I've ever bought. Though I've bought some nice foam beds, foam inevitably squashed down under my dog's weight, and had to be replaced every 2-6 months. After 6 months, the PetCare bed is showing no signs of aging whatsoever, even after my three-year-old nephew decided it would be fun to use as a trampoline.
The coil spring system provides the best support of any dog bed I've ever bought, as well. It offers firm support, distributed evenly across the bed, and it doesn't sag in the middle like other beds do over time. It's really a small, firm mattress for your dog; it's as nice as most "human" coil spring mattresses, only smaller.
In short, when I think of the hundreds of dollars I spent on numerous foam beds, I want to kick myself. If I'd just invested in this bed from the start, I would have saved myself time and money, and given my dog the best bed possible, from the outset.
Be smarter than I was: don't be put off by the price of this bed. It's a one-time investment, and money well spent for your dog's comfort, health, and overall well-being.
